Jalapeño Pepper Plant – Spicy, Productive, and Easy to Grow
Spice up your garden with our jalapeño pepper plant! Known for their bold flavor and medium heat, jalapeños are one of the most popular chili peppers for home gardens. These compact, high-yielding plants produce 2–4" green peppers that ripen to red if left on the vine. Perfect for salsas, pickling, stuffing, or grilling, jalapeños thrive in warm weather and full sun.
Our jalapeno pepper plants come in a 3" square pot, fully hardened off and ready to be planted directly into your garden. These sun-loving plants thrive with warmth, consistent care, and a little attention. Below is everything you need to know to grow healthy, productive pepper plants.
Jalapenos need full sun- at least 6-8 hours per day for optimal growth and fruit production.
Use well-draining, fertile soil rich in organic matter. Mix in compost or aged manure before planting.
Space plants 12-18 inches apart in rows 24-36 inches apart. Transplant with the root ball level to the soil surface and mulch to retain moisture and suppress weeds.
Keep soil consistently moist, but not soggy. Water at the base to avoid fungal issues. Reduce watering slightly as fruit begins to ripen to concentrate flavor.
Apply a balanced fertilizer at planting, then add more every 3-4 weeks. Avoid too much nitrogen as it can lead to lots of leaves but few peppers.
Harvest when peppers are 2-4 inches long, firm and deep green. For a sweeter, hotter flavor, let them ripen to red on the plant. Use scissors or pruning shears to avoid damage to the stem.
Extra tips
Ensure even watering and calcium in the soil to prevent fruit issues.
Pinch off the first flowers to encourage strong root and foliage development early on.
